Teaching Philosophy
Dance is a powerful medium for personal expression, growth, and transformation. As an educator, my role is to guide students in discovering their unique voices, fostering agency and confidence within both their bodies and minds. My pedagogical approach centers on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to explore, experiment, and connect deeply with the art form. I aim to equip dancers with a comprehensive toolkit that encompasses not only technical proficiency but also knowledge of health, wellness, and artistic integrity. Through this, I encourage each dancer to draw on their own experiences and interests, allowing them to cultivate their personal artistry in a way that is both meaningful and authentic.
Dance, by its very nature, is an ever-evolving journey. In my classes, students are prepared not only for future artistic endeavors but for life’s collaborative and independent challenges. I strive to foster an atmosphere of open-minded learning, where technical skills and creative exploration coexist. We emphasize the present development of the student while honoring the dance legends who have paved the way for our art form. My students will leave each class with enhanced self-confidence in their technique, a deeper sense of artistry, and an ongoing passion for discovery. Moreover, they will develop an understanding of the historical, cultural, and social contexts that inform the dance forms we study.
Central to my teaching philosophy is the creation of a strong, supportive community. I prioritize building trusting relationships with my students, encouraging open dialogue, and offering continuous feedback that nurtures both personal and collective growth. Students are held accountable for their engagement with the material, not only in terms of technical execution but also through reflection, self-assessment, and peer feedback. These practices foster a deeper understanding of the material and a collaborative spirit within the classroom. I am committed to listening closely to how students receive and internalize the lessons, ensuring that my teaching evolves in response to their needs. Using my experience as a soon-to-be school adjustment counselor has forwarded my practice of empathy, support, and having a growth mindset.
Dance is a profound catalyst for both intrapersonal and interpersonal development. My teaching goals are to strengthen each dancer’s technical abilities while deepening their connections to themselves, their peers, and the broader world. I assess these goals through a combination of individual performance and collaborative practice, valuing both the growth of personal technique and the ability to work cohesively within a group. Throughout each class, technical proficiency is integrated into every aspect of the training, from warm-ups to final combinations.
The experience of dance is as expansive mentally and emotionally as it is physically. In my classes, I emphasize the importance of alignment, strength, rhythm, musicality, and personal artistry. I am dedicated to challenging and nurturing each student—technically, physically, emotionally, and socially—so that they may grow as holistic, well-rounded artists. Above all, I believe dance is an outlet for each student to express their unique truths, share their passion, and connect deeply with themselves and others.
